Tayasir, Hamra, Monday, March 13, 2006, PMObservers: Alona C, Daphne B (reporting)A short shift; because of a traffic accident near Beit Hashita, we were stuck in a traffic jam and had to take an alternative route, arriving two hours later than planned. 14:45 TayasirUpon our arrival, the soldiers did not prevent us standing where we wanted, and there was no conversation with them. There were two cars from the direction of the Valley and one standing from Tayasir. Transit was fast through the whole shift, and there were no waiting lines. The same horrible ritual of all the passengers getting out (50 in the case of a bus), standing in a straight line alongside the road. In one case, a mother with a small unconscious child in her arms on her way to hospital. Before we could intervene, the soldiers allowed them back into the taxi, and they left.A (civilian) tour bus driver who was transporting soldiers shouted at us: “Defilers of Israel, traitors, lesbians, I would kill you with my own hands…” We ignored him, but a soldier protested loudly his use of these epithets to Jewish women (had we been Palestinians, would it have been all right?).The Palestinians, on the other hand, were happy to see us (“come every day, when you are here…”). They call to us from the bus and taxi windows, and wave warmly. We can’t help the emotion at the sight of their joy at seeing us. But what good do we do? After all, tomorrow and the day after, the same cruel reality of occupation awaits them. Checkpoints and runarounds.Somebody tells us that yesterday two Palestinians returning from work in a settlement were detained at 18:30 because of the contention, later rejected, that their IDs were forgeries. Let not forget that these people go to work at 04:00 in the morning.16:15: Before we left, a jeep arrived and an officer got out and started to move us from the checkpoint to the concrete partition. Because we were about to leave anyway, we did not argue, just stated our views and got out of there. Hamra, 16:45 The checkpoint was empty of Palestinians when we arrived. We did not stop. All there was to see were two bored soldiers.
