Tayasir, Hamra, Wednesday, June 7, 2006, PMObservers: Naomi V, Osnat D (reporting)13:35 – 15:30Tayasir, 13:35As we reach the checkpoint, the traffic is thin and quick, with the usual drill – stop, get out of the car, stand in line, hand over IDs, etc. The checkpoint is empty on both sides, with a car coming here or there. The attitude of the soldiers to the Palestinians and to us is courteous and reasonable. We left at 14:00 when the checkpoint was empty of vehicles.Hamra, 14:25Traffic flowing very slowly back to back. When we arrive, there are 11 vehicles in the direction of Tubas, and 12 eastward. At the checkpoint, there are soldiers from the Orthodox Nahal. As we stand watching, the inspection is efficient and thorough, but with progress. Within 45 minutes the line is gone. The soldiers tell us that they are working very hard, almost not sleeping at night (three hours), and there is no one to replace them. There were three soldiers at the checkpoint and one in the tower because the rest of the soldiers are on alert or on manhunts. Nevertheless, there is no sense of tension or pressure. One of the truck drivers asked for our telephone number in case of emergency. We left at 15:30 when the checkpoint was empty.
