Za’arta, Huwwarra, Beit Furik, Monday 23.1.2006 PMWatchers: Yael I. (new), Riva B. (reporting) Nir (guest)Natanya translating.13.20 -First sergeant I. and his unit ignore us and will not speak. For the first half hour Sergeant A. from the DCO is present and does not deal with any of the problems, suddenly gets into his car and disappears. Also from the DCO and the spokesperson of the brigade we get no response to phone calls. Sergeant I. is efficient and even helps with some of the humanitarian problems but will not listen to us when we try to draw his attention to severe problems at the side of the road. The most severe of these were the women, at least 10 the entire time, with children and babies who have to wait for their husbands once they have passed for at least an hour. One can see their tension and the fear of the children who are crying. Our guest Nir was very helpful in translating from Arabic to Hebrew and maybe that was our only contribution to the travesty of occupation. The Palestinians were very frustrated the entire time that we were there. One man who passed shouted at us “There will never be peace.” We understood from where he was coming.15.15Beit Iba – no lines and few cars.Za’atara – 12 trucks waiting which is often so at this hour.16.30 -At the crossroad in the direction of Git, more than 10 cars at a rolling checkpoint.Summary. A hard day even though there was nothing special about it.

    • A perimeter checkpoint west of the city of Nablus. Operated from 2001 to 2009 as one of the four permanent checkpoints closing on Nablus: Beit Furik and Awarta to the east and Hawara to the south. A pedestrian-only checkpoint, where MachsomWatch volunteers were present daily for several hours in the morning and afternoon to document the thousands of Palestinians waiting for hours in long queues with no shelter in the heat or rain, to leave the district city for anywhere else in the West Bank. From March 2009, as part of the easing of the Palestinian movement in the West Bank, it was abolished, without a trace, and without any adverse change in the security situation.
