Ar-Ram/Qalandiya Monday 10.1.05 PMObservers: Hava B., Noa A., Tova S. (reporting)On our way to Ar-Ram we saw numerous police cars, roadblocks and traffic jams (Jerusalem bound).Arriving at Ar-Ram we were impressed with the number of high-ranking Border Patrol officers at the CP, as well as many policemen and a soldier with a explosives-detector dog, and two helicopters circling overhead. The explanation given to us was that a terrorist with an explosive charge was known to be in the area. The Checkpoint was shut: no one coming or going.People keep arriving from the alleys descending to the CP. The men, before approaching the ID-checking soldiers, must open coats and lift sweaters and shirts to prove they had no explosives on their person. After these checks, they were not allowed to cross. The CP is closed from 14:00. While the entire area was closed, and we could not pass to Qalandiya, we heard of what was going on in Qalandiya CP via the telephone, from a group of American volunteers who had arrived from the Old City earlier: Qalandiya CP too was closed to both southbound and northbound traffic.Around 15:45, Qalandiya CP was opened. Shortly afterwards, so was Ar-Ram.The officers gone, choppers gone, and the CP open.We went to Qalandiya. We found several vendors both on the north and the south sides of the CP. Not many pedestrians, moving steadily. Vehicle traffic, however, was very slow and jammed.Freezing cold.
