Qalandiya, Ar-Ram, Sho'afatSunday, Jan. 16. AMWatchers: Na'ama K. Chana A.(reporting)6:30 Sho'afat - A grey morning with no particular events. Line of cars, many pedestrians, all pass.6:45 Ar-Ram: Very thin line of people, very few cars. Nothing particular to report. When we are here again on our way back from Qalandiya, we notice a new CP on the lane going north. This time the goal is to find stolen vehicles. It seems car theft in Jerusalem has reached new heights.7:00 Qalandiya. We are received coldly, not surprisingly. A certain soldier without any identifying signs at all, seems out to intimidate us :You stand over there! You can't go over there! But when we politely point out that he can't keep us from going to the end of the line and watching, he softens up and for the rest of our watch behaves decently towards the Palestinians he feels need special attention because they may not have the necessary permits. (He is not one of the MP's checking the pedestrians but stands outside the CP, where we stand, and only seems to check on what he deems needs an extra pair of eyes. He seems to be a new "addition" to the CP and not a welcome one!) Almost all of them pass through in the end in spite of his nastiness. The only special matter in addition to this to report is that the passage to the north is blocked by serpentines of barbed wire and only a narrow roundabout path is left to pass through on the left side. When we point this out, we get the answer that this keeps people from passing out of line north/south. It certainly makes passing unpleasant and almost impossible for people with handicaps and/or heavy packages.
