Ar-Ram, Qalandiya 08.02.05 p.m.Observers: Aya K, Roni H, Norah O (Reporting)15:45 - 18:30Ar-Ram: There were 13 adult detaineesinfo-icon and one small boy who were caught on their way back from Jerusalem going North to the territories. This was clearly a retroactive punishment on entry to Jerusalem. Several of them were already waiting in the bitter cold for hours (it was close to 0 degrees C). The commander Benny dismissed our questions with evasive answers. Roni called the complaint section of the border police, and a short time afterwards the detainees were asked to approach the CP commander. We thought that the sudden movement was due to our presence and our intervention, but we realized soon that we were wrong. Nine of the detainees were put into three jeeps and taken for interrogation at the Russian compound. Why? Benny's answer: Continuation of dealing with their case. Aya called one of the detainees to hear what happened to the nine men. They were released an hour and a half after they signed the form saying that if they were caught again, they would be sent to jail.At 16:15, we discovered two additional detainees who had been taken off a bus travelling north (after a random inspection that has become common during the past months). We asked to speed up the process of checking their i.d.'s and filling out the forms. The two were freed after half an hour. The current woman commander A. of the checkpoint is the same woman whom we know from previous unpleasant encounters. Once again, she behaved with craven rudeness. "If you continue to speak with the detainees, I'll lock them in a room" she warned us. How do you feel at the end of the day after you have come down with abuse on everyone, I asked. "Great! That's my job".Qalandiya: 16:45 There were no peddlers in the intersection. It was just too cold, we were told. In the north, there were few people going through (probably because of the weather). Also the line of cars was shorter than usual. The soldiers' behaviour was unusally proper today. But the turnstiles for pedestrians going North have been reinstalled, and, once more, the awful sight of people pushing through with huge parcels and babyinfo-icon carriages in as almost acrobatic way, has turned like a nightmare. All this happened the same day the Sharm-a-Sheikh summit disseminated grand promises about reconciliation, removing checkpoints, facilitation the life of the Palestinians and what not!
