January 9, election day, PM, East-Jerusalem,Observers: Rachel O and Hannah Y (reporting).Shuafat post office. We saw no soldiers, two voters and a great deal of observers from all over the world, Japanese, Americans, Scandinavians, also at least one Israeli Arab whose job was to drive some of these foreigners around. We were told that Jimmy Carter had been on the spot. The American TV crew was still hanging around. One Palestinian told us he lived in East- Jerusalem but had voted in Ar-Ram because his name had been on the wrong list. He translated for us what another Palestinian was screaming, namely that East-Jerusalemites should not vote under Israeli occupation. As his own opinion, he added that if the votes had been cast in the adjoining mosque instead of in an Israeli Post Office, many East-Jerusalemites might have participated. As it was, both men solely performed for the American TV crew.We went home early.
