The turnstile was not operating and people were pushed up to the gate. About half an hour later, a Palestinian came out, after talking with the soldiers, and began to organize the passage.

We arrived at 15:45 and we saw the about 15 people and a five year old boy trying to climb the gate and shouting "we are hungry, we are tired, open the gate, we want to get home". The people said they are from Azzun 'Atma. Their houses are outside the fence and they have authorization to cross the gate but each time they have to buy milk they enter the village after presenting the authorization and depositing their IDs, but this time they left early in the morning to pick their olive trees which are inside the village. They finished their work and arrived at the gate at 13:00 to return home, the soldiers didn't enable them to pass and when they asked why? The answer was that the soldiers lost military binoculars and they were sure that one of them found it and that they won't return to their homes until the binoculars are returned.

At the CP there is no queue. Whoever arrives immediately enters the checking post. A Palestinian with a nylon bag containing electric wires on his way home arrives. The military policewoman doesn't allow him to cross the CP with his possession. He asks her "What can I do with this?" and she answers "throw it away".

The fence next to the checkpoint abuts the road, alongside it a single line of people (there’s no room for anything wider) that keeps getting longer as workers are dropped off by their employers. The line keeps getting longer, and as darkness begins to fall it numbers more than one hundred persons. Before we left we asked one of those at the end of the line to call us when he gets through the checkpoint. He’d arrived at the checkpoint at 16:30. We left at 16:45. He called at 18:00. All the workers want is to go home after a day work at the settlements and in Israel.
