Afternoon

Observers: two Palestinian women,a third woman
Apr-01-2003
| Morning

There was a pedestrian lane (one single lane for both directions), and a lane for cars (for both directions). Taxis wait further north to take people to Tul-Karem. Between the two ends there is a road which leads east to the settlements of Enav and others, in the direction of Nablus – no checkpoint there. The local “Tora Bora” is up that road, on the hills among the olive trees between Taibe and the village of Shufa. Right beyond the turn to the east they’re building the separation wall. There were few pedestrians and even fewer cars (mostly settler’s cars coming from the east (Nablus direction) to the south (Taibe – Israel), or Palestinian cars from the north to the east and (less often) vice versa. The soldiers claimed that the taxis at the northern end were standing too near the checkpoint and until they leave, no pedestrians will be allowed through. A taxi driver explains that only agricultural workers are allowed into Israel. We later learned that in the mornings women (of all ages) transporting agricultural products are not allowed through and must walk through the hills (Tora-Bora) which is much longer – but in the evening they’re allowed to go through to Tul-Karem. A police car arrives and let out two Palestinian women out –who told us that they were detained at 05:00 AM. It is now 16:20. They’d been with a third woman who for some reason was let go earlier. They were taken to the courthouse in Natanya where they were made to sign something. They think it was an admission that they’d crossed into Israel without permits. They’d been interrogated and threatened with a 48 hour detention, but then let go. We gave them a Moked card. 16:30 A Palestinian ambulance arrives from the east (1826), is checked and immediately allowed to go north.Another ambulance (77117) immediately comes from the east is checked and let through to the north. Another ambulance comes from the east (6403690) and is allowed north.16:50 An ambulance from the north is checked and allowed to go east. We notice many police cars of many kinds all the time.17:05 An ambulance with medication comes from the north and is allowed east.17:10 A middle-class looking couple with fertilizers for gardening come (on foot) and are forbidden to take it north (“no fertilizers are allowed through”) – they eventually walk back south – probably to walk through Tora-Bora…A man from the north with a cart full of jeans and clothes – the cart is allowed south he gets paid and walks north. He explains he has a business in Tul Karem (jewels) and clothes – in Israel…More agricultural working women with strawberries arrive from the south and are let through to the north .17:30 A man carrying a windshield on his shoulder walks through from the south – the soldier lets him through but the police call him aside, check and then let him go north.
