Afternoon
MachsomWatchers: S.B., I.M.The weather is very cold, with a strong wind blowing.Checkpoint 300: a long column of people walking towards Jerusalem and moving ahead rapidly. Some of the get through via Tantur (and a Border Police jeep is waiting to apprehend them).Private cars pass through on their way to Jerusalem after their drivers’ papers are checked.Buses and pick-up trucks that came from Jerusalem to pick up laborers at the checkpoint are instructed – by shouts through the jeep’s megaphone – to turn round and not to park on the road leading to the checkpoint. In the direction of Bethlehem, four (empty) UN trucks and buses are waiting – no attention is paid to them; as well as eight detainees whom we were unable to approach. Our attempts to find out what’s going on are met with aggressive silence. Nothing much could be done.Al-Khadr: people are getting through and are collected by pick-up trucks and buses. No soldiers or Border Police to be seen, and moreover there were no disturbances during the night. However, the kiosk-owners relate the following incident: Yesterday afternoon, soldiers arrived in response to children throwing stones on the nearby road. (According to their red boots, they might have been Nahal soldiers. One of them had the letter “Tz” on his forearm – could have been in the Military Police). They hit a child, shattered the glass front of the kiosks, turned over trays of cakes and broke soft drink bottles. People told us that it was one specific soldier who had done the same in the past. They [the eyewitnesses] have “Moked” cards and know it’s worth noting down the jeep’s license-plate number, the soldier’s rank, and any other detail likely to help identify them and to file a complaint. This time, though, they simply didn’t manage to distinguish all the details. The Tunnels checkpoint: no queue waiting. IDF Nahal soldiers as well as women officers of the Military Police are on the scene.
