Passage was no longer allowed through the field. Two Border Police were standing near the stone wall from which Palestinians wishing to cross over jumped in the past and turned back all people. We continued up the hill, to the start of the passageway of the sleeve. Three meter-high concrete blocks blocked the passage. The three Border Police on duty, Zohar Kashlishvilli, Tzvi Blumenov and Asaf Marom were very hostile, especially Blumenov. He said we were bothering them with their work and demanded that we stand back. After some argument, we moved about 4 meters back. A few minutes later, a Border Policeman (named Impermiov) in a jeep pulled up to give us another warning about our interference with the soldiers’ work. When we witnessed old, pregnant, crippled, and infirm people trying to maneuver their way over the blocks, we continued to move forward to help them and the B.P.’s kept quiet. T. called Safadi to complain about the inhuman conditions. Safadi contended that there is no passageway at Abu Dis. The concrete blocks mark the municipal boundaries of Jerusalem, and therefore that is the border and the soldiers are exercising extraordinary consideration in allowing anyone at all to cross through. The proper place to cross over, she was told, is at Za’im, and that is the way they should go. She contended that that required the Palestinians to travel by vehicle and go way out of the way, but to no avail. As we walked back toward the intersection, we noticed a new van of border police with about 20 personnel walking around. The van (unnecessarily and inconveniently) blocked the road into the village while the change of guard took place. Waiting to get through was a woman who lives in Abu Dis who teaches in Issawiya and who was driving her three children home from the Schmidt School. She spoke with us (in excellent English) about the day to day humiliations they endure. She also said that she noticed machsomwatchers in their posts in all kinds of weather but said that she felt that our efforts were essentially useless.
