Bethlehem and surrounding, Friday 3.6.05, a.mObservers: Ruhama W., Magdalena H., (reporting)A very quiet shift, without any soldiers, not on the roads or Al-Khader, traffic circle of Ezion, Hussan or Wallag’e. Just as usual at the CP 300. Either no pedestrians and very few cars on the way.At CP 300 we had a very surrealistic meeting with a settler’s mother who wished to bring her daughter’s Shabat clothes to Rachel’s tomb, were her daughter already was. And all that with our help and via the soldiers from the CP. Another talk, not less surrealistic with an ultra religious visitor from New York who came here with his family. He tried to convince us, that if we (the Israelis) would give the honour to the “Arabs” that their deserve, everything will become fine in our area.This morning, Shabat 4.6. four potters from Hebron wished to go to Ein Harod for an exhibition vernissage. They have a very important part in this exhibition. The Ceramic Artists Association of Israel arranged all needed papers. But unfortunately just three of them arrived Ein Harod. The last one was picked up for “checking” in front of his house in Hebron, just like that and for no reason. He couldn’t get released on time.

Al-Khadr served as transit from Bethlehem to Route 60. A dirt mound prevent vehicular traffic from and to Bethlehem from the west. A small market developed there. Taxi ranks were on both sides of the obstruction. It was replaced by a similar obstruction at Al Nashash which has recently been removed and thus the way from Bethlehem to Hebron through Route 60 is now free.

According to Wye Plantation Accords (1997), Hebron is divided in two: H1 is under Palestinian Authority control, H2 is under Israeli control. In Hebron there are 170,000 Palestinian citizens, 60,000 of them in H2. Between the two areas are permanent checkpoints, manned at all hours, preventing Palestinian movement between them and controlling passage of permit holders such as teachers and schoolchildren. Some 800 Jews live in Avraham Avinu Quarter and Tel Rumeida, on Givat HaAvot and in the wholesale market.
