‘Anabta, Ar-Ras, Qalqiliya, Tue 9.9.08, Afternoon

Observers: Amit A. Yael S.; Natanya translating

| Afternoon

13:20 Ar-Ras

Little traffic. Some cars are checked carefully and some are just waved through. The soldier said that he checked anyone he thought suspicious.

At the Children's Gate a police car stopped a Palestinian who received a report for not wearing a seat belt. We had stopped to see if help was needed and then had a conversation with the soldiers about the necessity of the  checkpoint.

I am always amazed at the ignorance of the soldiers. "We are not an occupying army." This is what they say.

We wait a few minutes for the gate to be opened and in the meantime watch the Tayaniem passage where there are no lines of cars.

14:25 Anabta.

Cars pass without delay. Sometimes two or three line up as the soldiers are chatting and forget to wave them forward.

We bought figs and continued to Beit Iba.

At Qalqiliya cars entered quickly.

The checkpoint is located south of the village of 'Anabta, at the intersection of Road 60 (leading to Nablus at the entrance to Area A), with Road (57, 557, 5576) facing west towards the Einav settlement and the checkpoint at the exit from the West Bank - Figs checkpoint. Until 2010 we used to watch the intersection and report the long columns created due to a slow inspection of the vehicles in both directions.

    • Qalqilya is surrounded on all sides by the separation barrier. The only exit from the city is in the east of the city on the road that leaves the city in an easterly direction. This is where the checkpoint was located. When the checkpoint was active until 2009 our shifts watched long queues of cars being inspected at the only exit from the city to the West Bank. The checkpoint was canceled, but there is a military presence at the entrance to the city.
