Anabta, Jubara Sunday, 30/4/2006 PM Observers: Aliyah S. Alix W (Reporting) 16:22 Anabta As we approach the taxi drivers tell us that the soldiers are allowing everyone to go into Tulkarm, but only residents of Beit Lid and Shufa allowed to come out. The soldiers call 3 pedestrians at a time to check IDs and pass, he tells some the younger men that they can go, but will not be able to exit Tulkarm. Some taxis pass, and some are told the same, that they will not be able to exit again. The soldier reluctantly tells us ‘all can go into Tulkarm, not everyone can leave’ – who can not leave? We don’t get answer from the soldier. The people and vehicles are passing without much delay, the soldiers here seem to be working efficiently and well-mannered. 16:57 Jubara We park in front of Abu Ghatem’s home with no problems in entering. There is no one in the detainee pen, we approach the soldiers to say hello, and they do not know who we are or what we do here. We stand on the side, but here too we are disturbing the soldiers from doing their ‘job’. The soldier that we are disturbing hopes we are writing good things about them and not bad. Between the two checkpoints there is a truck carrying sand, the driver and the truck are from Israel, they are not allowed into Tulkarm, when we ask the soldier he says the sand may have been taken illegally, we assume that there was no receipt of purchase. At the Tulkarm side we are again disturbing the soldiers; we are in the ‘sterile area’ and they want us further away. We see Abu Ghatem and his family passing, they are going to visit Hanin, it is so good to see friendly welcoming faces.
