Anata, Bir Naballah
Anata, Bir Naballah, Wednesday, 28.2.2007, AM Observers: Yehudit E. and Nava E. (reporting)Anata 6:40 – Children pass without being checked, both on the path and on the road. The cars arrive in two lines and their ends cannot be seen. According to reports, it is half an hour’s delay.A few cars arrive from the left side, cutting through the cement blocks, bullying their way to the head of the line. On the internal side stand a group of 6-7 men who did not get a permit to pass for work. They all have valid permits of families unity and they pass every day without any problems. Their friend who arrived at the checkpoint before 6:00 had been granted passage. They arrived after 6:00 and were turned down. Since they do not have a blue ID, the Minestry for Internal Affairs refuses to note on the ID attachment that they live in Anata, which is in the Jerusalem municipal jurisdiction, even though their wives live there. We did not receive immediate answers to our phone calls. The answer that came through after two hours was that nothing can be done today and that they should try again tomorrow. Their entire workday has been wasted, anyway. Lil 7:20 – On the road between the Ramallah bypass and that which leads from Pisgat Zeev North of Jerusalem, there is a turn left into Qalandiya, Ar-Ram and Ramallah. In the middle of the road, appeared a new vehicle checkpoint – the Lil checkpoint. The first time we travelled towards it, there were only a few cars that went past it swiftly. When we returned, an hour and a half later, a line of about 50 cars and trucks stretched behind it.Beside the checkpoint, a conspicuous sign was planted, warning Israeli citizens about moving further down towards Ramallah, as it is Area A. Bir Naballah 7:30 – Last time we arrived at Bir Naballah via Ramot checkpoint into Al-Jib enclave and Bir Naballah to Rafaat checkpoint, under Road 443. This time we decided to come straight from Qalandiya. We got lost for a while in the opposite direction and had a vast detour in the different neighbourhoods. The road is full of holes and bumps of considerable size, which are a hazard to the vehicles, particularly during a night-drive in unlit territory. We spoke with several of the residents, who told us that they pay The Jerusalem Municipality its municipal tax – 5000 NIS a year- The municipality, for its part, does not feel responsible for distributing mail, collecting the garbage or fixing the problematic roads.
