| Morning

One of our objectives for this shift was to show Pierre how to get to the Tibeh – Romenah Checkpoint.

The traffic was not in our favor this morning.  There was a traffic jam near Jeisar al Zarka where there was a stalled taxi and a police checkpoint, and we had to drive slowly from Katzir to A’anin because of thick fog.
06:20 – A’anin Checkpoint

We arrived five minutes after the official opening time (06:15.  Military policemen and a representative from the Coordination and Liaison Administration were already there, but no one had crossed yet.  When we arrived the first person crossed, followed by  about a dozen people, a boy, and two tractors.  The last person to cross was the person who had arrived first because something had to be clarified.  Evidently he had crossed yesterday at Barta’a where people returning to the West Bank are not listed, and he was therefore suspected of staying overnight in the seamline zone or in Israel.

A large armored military vehicle and two jeeps belonging to the border patrol crossed the checkpoint.  There were more soldiers than Palestinians.

At 06:35 the checkpoint closed and the soldiers left for Tibeh Romena Checkpoint via the security road.  We drove there via Um el Fahem and the soldiers arrived there before we did.

06:50 – Tibeh Romena Checkpoint

The soldiers were surprised to see a taxi arrive at the checkpoint and asked the Palestinians if we had come to pick up a sick person.  About 12 people crossed here, including two women.  At 07:05 the checkpoint closed and we left, stopping for coffee and driving up to Um El Faham.

    • 'Anin checkpoint (214)
'Anin checkpoint is located on the Separation Fence east of the Israeli community Mei Ami and close to the village of Anin in the West Bank. It is opened twice a week, morning and afternoon, on days with shorter light time, for Anin farmers whose olive groves have been separated from the village by the fence it became difficult to cultivate their land. Transit permits are only issued to those who can produce ownership documents for their caged-in land, and sometimes only to the head of the family or his widow, eldest son, and children. Sometimes the inheritors lose their right to tend to the family’s land. The permits are eked out and are re-issued only with difficulty. 55-year-old persons may cross the checkpoint (into Israel) without special permits. During the olive harvest season (about one month around October) the checkpoint is open daily and more transit permits are issued. Names of persons eligible to cross are held in the soldiers’ computers. In July 2007, a sweeping instruction was issued, stating that whoever does not return to the village through this checkpoint in the afternoon will be stripped of his transit permit when he shows up there next time. Since 2019, the checkpoint has not been allways locked with the seam-line zone gate (1 of 3 gates), and the fence around it has been broken in several sites.
