Ar-Ram, Qalandiya, Thursday morning, 28.6.2007Observers: Milly M. Avital (reporting), Natanya translatingA very hot day at Anabta and today, different from other days, the border policeman greeted us and offered us water. The work caused cars and pedestrians to go through one lane which was very crowded and dusty but passed in an orderly fashion. Children in their best clothing waited to be transported to parties for the end of the school year festivities. At 7.45 there is little traffic to Jerusalem and it flows without delay. But cars leaving the city are carefully checked and there is a traffic jam mainly of trucks who are being checked by one soldier only. At the side of the road is an elderly man having an argument with a soldier and a border police captain. Phone calls, attempts to convince made politely but he has to go back to Jerusalem in his car. The border police man says that the man was not sure where he was going and therefore he could not pass. The next minute they stopped checking this lane and traffic went through and one can only ask was the checkpoint put up only for this man?8.15 Qalandiya Many families waiting for the prisoner’s visits and they are accompanied by an Israeli television crew and there the checking is done at two gates and takes 20 minutes. In the meantime the pressure mounts at the other gates and all the gates are open but many people are arriving and all this in the heat of the early morning which has only started .
