Ar-Ram, Qalandiya, Bir Naballah, Tuesday, 16.05.06 a.m.Observers: Neta E, Mor B (reporting)7:00 Ar-RamFew cars, a lot of children. 5 detainees who tried to cross from the eastern side of the wall to the western side. There is no passage for cars through the checkpoint. That is to say, anyone who wants to get to from Dahyah el Barid to Ar-Ram must travel via Qalandiya.Cars from Dahyah el Barid to Jerusalem go by way of the lower road, west of the checkpoint without crossing the checkpoint (where the GSS used to catch them). We tried to find a bus on the Israeli side of the wall (the gate pass through) in order to travel to the Qalandiya checkpoint but we were unable to do so. We crossed the checkpoint to the Palestinian side and easily got a cab to the Palestinian side of the Qalandiya intersection. (We bi-passed the Qalandiya checkpoint from the east).8:10 QalandiyaThe Qalandiya checkpoint was totally empty of pedestrians. There was a short line of cars heading toward Jerusalem. We realized that at the moment, so long as there is any possibility, buses and cars travel north on the eastern side of the wall and come back to Jerusalem on the western side. That’s what we did as well.8:35 An attempt to get to Bir NaballahWe took bus number 45 from Dahiya el Barid (from the western side of the wall) to Bir Naballah. When we got to the checkpoint at the entrance to Bir Naballah – where there is no passage at all — either to people or cars. We realized that the people who used this bus are actually traveling to the industrial area of Atarot or that they are passing around the checkpoint. There are children from Dahiya el Barid who study in Bir Naballah and the other way around. Since they set up a checkpoint between Bir Naballah and Dahiya, the children can’t get to school except through the Qalandiya checkpoint, something which considerably lengthens their journey, forces them to pass through a checkpoint. Having no choice, the children climb through the hills around them. 9:00 Ar-RamAbout 20 cars. The soldiers were checking all of them (both the cars and the pedestrians) with the computer which considerably lengthened the waiting time, even though there were not that many cars.
