Ar-Ram, Qalandiya Friday, 09.12.05 a.mObservers: Tirtza L, (reporting) Lia L.It was the morning after the fatal stabbing of a soldier at Qalandiya.8:30 Ar-Ram There was movement at the checkpoint of pedestrians and vehicles. A boy who tried to cross the checkpoint across the street and not through the checkpoint was called to by the commander of the checkpoint who ran in his direction. He demanded that he return to where he came from. The boy went back. It appeared that he was impaired. A police car came to the checkpoint from Jerusalem. A policeman and two young boys got out who were told to return via the checkpoint to the north. Apparently, they were caught without permits. A taxi passing through the checkpoint toward Jerusalem was checked and the soldier checking found that one of the passengers did not have a permit. He asked the commander of the checkpoint if he should allow her to pass. The commander said no. Yesterday they murdered one of our soldiers. The woman did not get out of the cab. The first soldier related frivolously to the incident. The commander demanded that she get out. After a few minutes, she got out and returned north. A security man from the “Ari Security Agency” was at the checkpoint. He said that he is here regularly, and not because of what happened yesterday. He guards the fence. We engaged in a brief conversation with the security guard and with the soldiers at the checkpoint about our position regarding the checkpoints and about what happened yesterday . 9:00 QalandiyaTotally closed. The concrete blocks and the piles of fencing were spread out between the intersection and the start of the checkpoint. There is no passage. Two vehicles with border police are on the northern side of the concrete blocks. Where we were standing, there was movement of vehicles making u turns or turning left to the road on the western side of the fence. Several 10’s of people and vehicles were near the intersection. A number of people from abroad, two of whom were photographing were there. The people said that there is no way to get to Ramallah. Whoever has a foreign passport can travel via Surda – an hour’s trip with checkpoints on the way, and from there can go by foot to the checkpoint and finally to Ramallah. Two border police got out of their car and went up the steps on the eastern side – apparently a woman was trying to get down from there. (We could not see from our angle). They called to her to get away. She did not answer and they stood there for 10 minutes, called her to get away, until someone called to them with a megaphone to return.
