Ashkalon prison; 20 Aug. 2007 Observers and reports: Hanna R., Aliza R.Translated by Eldad K.We don’t know the name of the judge, seeing him for the first time here. The prisoner: Haldon El-Naatcha, a young man from Hebron who is represented by a lawyer from Jerusalem, Shemesh, an Israeli. Start of the proceedings: 10:45; finish: 11:00The prisoner is in isolation and the lawyer who has taken the trouble to come all the way from Jerusalem is not allowed to meet with him. We too had to wait outside. Advocate Shemesh told us that there is no reason for his arrest and isolation, and added that this procedure is illegal and he would appeal in Ofer prison. To be continued.The accused: Osamah (/)Was arrested on 17 July 2007 (!) and admitted to the offenses charged. He is part of a group and thus, says the police representative, the investigation is multi-directional. Extension of arraignment for 11 days is requested. The accused confirms having admitted to the acts. Four more days of arrest are granted. Most were in isolation, so for most of the time we had to sit outside the courtroom. The proceedings for some reason moved very slowly. We were told there are delays.

    • According to Wye Plantation Accords (1997), Hebron is divided in two: H1 is under Palestinian Authority control, H2 is under Israeli control. In Hebron there are 170,000 Palestinian citizens, 60,000 of them in H2. Between the two areas are permanent checkpoints, manned at all hours, preventing Palestinian movement between them and controlling passage of permit holders such as teachers and schoolchildren. Some 800 Jews live in Avraham Avinu Quarter and Tel Rumeida, on Givat HaAvot and in the wholesale market.
