 Shave Shomron 15:00

The yellow barrier is back, as is the booth at the side of the road.  There are rumors about relocating the Beit Iba checkpoint.  As of now, only rumors.  We drove on the road to Jenin alongside the wall around Shave Shomron until we reached the checkpoint.  A number of middle-aged Palestinian men stop us near the sign warning against entering Area A, and tell us that a few days ago settlers from Shave Shomron stopped them, beat them and set their vehicle on fire.  They filed a complaint at the Ariel police station

where they were asked to leave the vehicle in order to check whether the fire may have been caused by a short circuit.  They said the incident had been reported on Channel 10.  They’re waiting for the police to return their vehicle.  They’ve been in contact with Azmi, from “Yesh Din,” so there’s nothing for us to do other than to report it.

The checkpoint is fairly empty.  Few pedestrians.  Fewer taxis than usual.  It turns out that students are on vacation today because of the holiday (the Prophet’s birthday), and the curfew may also have an effect.  Vehicles entering through the vehicle checkpoint aren’t inspected.  There’s a long line at the exit, and the inspection is slow.  Only the quarry is operating at full speed, sending clouds of dust into the air.

    • A perimeter checkpoint west of the city of Nablus. Operated from 2001 to 2009 as one of the four permanent checkpoints closing on Nablus: Beit Furik and Awarta to the east and Hawara to the south. A pedestrian-only checkpoint, where MachsomWatch volunteers were present daily for several hours in the morning and afternoon to document the thousands of Palestinians waiting for hours in long queues with no shelter in the heat or rain, to leave the district city for anywhere else in the West Bank. From March 2009, as part of the easing of the Palestinian movement in the West Bank, it was abolished, without a trace, and without any adverse change in the security situation.
