Beit Iba, Shave Shomron, Thu 20.11.08, Morning

Observers: Shoshana Z., Nina S. (reporting) Trans. Judith Green
Nov-20-2008
| Morning

8:10, Shavei Shomron –

The checkpoint is open and
there is no inspection.

8:20, Beit Iba –

A short line for vehicles at the
entrance.  No line at the exit.  Very few pedestrians at the exit, a
lot at the entrance but no delays.

8:25 – Vehicles are piling up at the exit – no
inspector!  After 5 minutes, a female inspector arrives and the passage is
now quick;  the line dissolves within 5 minutes.

8:45 – The "patrol" arrives with two men who
are sent to the detention area because they "sneaked around".
The checkpoint commander promised that they would be released within an
hour, it is not a punishment, but…

9:10 – Another detainee, a youth, taken off a bus
which entered;  his ID number came up in the inspection.

9:25 – He is released.

The detention of the bus, until they decided what to
do with him, increased the line but an additional lane was soon opened and the
line dissolved.

    • A perimeter checkpoint west of the city of Nablus. Operated from 2001 to 2009 as one of the four permanent checkpoints closing on Nablus: Beit Furik and Awarta to the east and Hawara to the south. A pedestrian-only checkpoint, where MachsomWatch volunteers were present daily for several hours in the morning and afternoon to document the thousands of Palestinians waiting for hours in long queues with no shelter in the heat or rain, to leave the district city for anywhere else in the West Bank. From March 2009, as part of the easing of the Palestinian movement in the West Bank, it was abolished, without a trace, and without any adverse change in the security situation.
