Beit Iba, Tue 11.12.07, Afternoon

Place: Beit Iba
Observers: Devorka O., Bruria R.

| Afternoon

Natanya translating.

Beit Iba. Two lanes, one ordinary and one humanitarian. The commander explains that because of the building it is impossible to open more lanes but later we ask him to reconsider and he does open one.
One of the changes because of the building is that the detention cell is now far off so that we will not be able to get to it. This time there were no detainees but when there are it will be very difficult.

The behaviour of the soldiers was reasonable except for one which directed people with his rifle using it as a barrier. While we were there 10-15 cars lined up  and  checking took about 10 minutes.

    • A perimeter checkpoint west of the city of Nablus. Operated from 2001 to 2009 as one of the four permanent checkpoints closing on Nablus: Beit Furik and Awarta to the east and Hawara to the south. A pedestrian-only checkpoint, where MachsomWatch volunteers were present daily for several hours in the morning and afternoon to document the thousands of Palestinians waiting for hours in long queues with no shelter in the heat or rain, to leave the district city for anywhere else in the West Bank. From March 2009, as part of the easing of the Palestinian movement in the West Bank, it was abolished, without a trace, and without any adverse change in the security situation.
