Bethlehem, Al Nashash, Nebi Yunis, DCO Etzion, 27/6/07 Wed, AMObservers: O, D, R, reportingY– drivingBethlehem Terminal, 6:45 amThe lines are short. The atmosphere is quiet. Five stations are open for checking. Each person is checked in four to five seconds. At 6:55 everyone has passed. Two women come up to us who say they are from “The Michigan Peace Team”. They work against violence. At demonstrations they put themselves between demonstrators and soldiers. When asked how they are treated, one answered “with respect”.Al Nashash, 7:20 amThree people come for help with police reports. One man tells us his wife is a Jerusalem resident, and for the past month he cannot get a permit to visit her and the children. His wife is afraid to go to the Ministry of Interior in Jerusalem because they may confiscate her ID there. We direct him to a meeting with an attorney in Beit Jalla next week.Nebi Yunis, 8:00 amOne man tells us that his home was destroyed, and he and his family are living in a tent. Etzion DCL, 8:45 amFifteen people are in the waiting room. 25 numbers were given out and people are being served. A man, age 26, desperate to work, is told not to come back until he is 28. Someone in the waiting room says that his ID was taken from him by an officer as punishment “for not acting properly”. The officer will not say how long he must wait. When we questioned the DCL staff about this we were told: “it is all up to the officer. He is in charge and there is no one superior to him to contact.” A woman age 27 who lost a leg as a child and wears a prothesis has an appointment at Hadassah tomorrow. She is refused by the General Security Services. She was treated at Alyn years ago and has been to Hadassah many times. We try reaching Dalia Bassa, but she is in a seminar all day. There is no one else to turn to. We suggest she fax Hadassah and try to get help through them, and to return tomorrow to try again.
