Bethlehem Area
Bethlehem Tue. Sept. 28, 2004 AMWatchers: Yehudit E., Hana Y. (reporting)Bethlehem 300 – 6:30Only a few cars wait on either side of the CP. Thesoldiers seem to work efficiently. A few pedestrianswait on the Bethlehem side.A university teacher arrives in his car, but isrefused passage. He turns around knowing full wellthat a 10 minute ride will now take much longerthrough another checkpoint. We do not seeschoolchildren, perhaps because Daylight Saving Timethat is still in force in theterritories. We next went to CP X where about 15 cars waited forthe CP to open. We were on our way to meet aPalestinian at Ein Yallo at 7:00.After going back and forth between Wallaga CP and EinYallo CP, andafter several phone calls, we finally meet the man.The soldiers tell us that had he gone to Ein Yallo, hewould have been arrested as an”illegal”. We, on the other hand, were not allowed touse the dirt roadleading to his house. It turns out that the man, hisfather and his brothers, have been living forgenerations in this house which is situated near themonastery of Kremizan. The separation barrier herehas annexed Kremizan and his house to Jerusalem. Theman and his family have Palestinian IDs, even thoughthey pay city tax and utilities to the Jerusalemmunicipality. Lately, they have been disturbed atnight by BP soldiers who arrest his brother and takehim to the CP, in an attempt to force the family togive up their house.El KHader – 8:20No army in sight.DCO Etzion – 8:30An old man sweeps around the compound. He tells usthat he’s beenemployed by the DCO for the last 4 years. It’s hard tobelieve considering how the place looks. About 20-30people wait in the shed. Three counters are open; 2happy people just have received their magnetic cards. The police counter, that was supposed to open at 9:00(as attested by the notices hung in several places) isclosed. Another notice, pointed to us by the janitor, says that the police counter will be closed today.Another instance of the total disregard for thepopulation. People who need M.’s services can onlyfind out about thechanged hours when they come at the appointed timeonly to find that there is no reception.
