Bethlehem CP and Etsion DCLSunday, July 1, AMObservers: Sylvia P, Ofra B, Renana S and Chana A (reporting with Sylvia)Guests: three young women from abroad (US and Hong Kong)6:50 Bethlehem CP: A steady flow of workers. Seemingly an orderly day. Inside five booths were open and few men waiting in line. At about 7:20 four windows closed but then we heard from our Ecumenical friends that there was a bottleneck on the other side: People were not allowed to pass the magnetic metal detector and hundreds were waiting to go through. After ten-fifteen minutes and many phone calls these people came through and a bottleneck was created on our side. After more phone calls, another two booths were opened and by 7:45 most people had come through. The commander of the CP was very helpful, as he usually is. He answered our calls and dealt with the problem.A venerable kadi who has all the right permits, sits on the Islamic court in Jerusalem and passes through every day, was refused to pass because of a police record. He said he has no car and no problems. We could not help him.8:10 Etsion DCL: Not many people waiting outside and few inside. No line for permits. It came out that everybody willing to have some permit crossed the turnstiles. But a long time passed and nobody went out. People said that nothing is moving inside. We met many blacklisted people who came specially to meet us; others came to try and make a magnetic card after many failures. We provided some of them with written explanations about the new rules which we got from the legal adviser of the west bank and the form the employer must fill if he doesn’t succeed to get a permit for the person. We also gave information about the Supreme Court project.Numbers for magnetic cards have to be handled at 10:00 on Sundays. It was 10:15 and no soldier came out. We called the humanitarian hot-line and complained. They called us back and told that numbers will be handled at 10:30. We asked why nobody took care of notifying the people about it. The general approach is obviously to let them wait…………..When we were leaving, at 10:20, some people started to leave with permits or… without them. A young woman approached us and complained that she needs to go to a hospital in East Jerusalem and she didn’t get a permit. She was so angry that she tore the refusal form into pieces. With our stapler we put the pieces together and she disappeared for some time. When she was back her eyes were red. She was crying. After putting the pieces together we learned that she is blacklisted, she must come 3 days in advance (so she needed a new appointment for the hospital) and bring a detailed medical report. We explained to her through a translator what is requested from her and she left.We drove home…………………. to our comfortable home.
