Bethlehem, El-Hader, Ezyon DCO23.5.2006Observers:Michaela R.Yael l.-J. (reporting) Judy S.Bethlehem Terminal CP 300: 6,45 a.m. It seems people know that our activities at the new terminals are reduced. We cannot enter the building and it’s checking and waiting zones. We can only observe outgoing Palestinians on their way to Jerusalem and ask them about what goes on inside. At our arrival we found a lot of Palestinian workers waiting on the Jerusalem side of the wall for their employers. One told us that he had waited since 5 a.m., another just half an hour. All those we questioned agreed that today it was easy to pass , compared to other days. Al Khadr: 7:30 a.m. There were no soldiers and no jeeps around. People were walking and merchants just opening their small shops. A man approached us and requested judical help. He showed us a summons to court for the 29th of August. He told us that the police found Hashish in a taxi he was driving. He declared his innocence. Michaela recommended he ask HaMoked for assistance and gave him their phone number. At this time the traffic on road no.60 to Jerusalem is a stop and go. Efrat (an Israeli settlement) 8 a.m. More and more new buildings. Beautiful, clean, full of flowers. Looks wealthy. Ezyon DCO 8,20 a.m. There were 19 cars parked on the parking lot when we arrived. Inside the waiting room 40 people waited, outside in the hot sun there were 24 more people. A lot of them asked for our help. We could only focus on some cases described below:1. A middle aged woman wants to work (cleaning) at a Greek Orthodox monastery. Refused because the quota is full. We gave her Sylvia’s phone number. 2. A man requested a magnetic card. There is no policeman present to give the clearance certificate. 3. A young woman with a baby and a small child from a Westbank village wants to live with her husband who lives in Jerusalem. We have no advice.4. A 57 year old woman wants a permit to accompany her blind husband on Thursday to St. John’s Hospital in Jerusalem. No one in this family is got a permit. Israel is obstructing Medical treatment.Michaela promises to organize help form our side. 5. A man from the refugee camp Dehaishe told us, that he came in vain today for the 5th time for a magnetic card.Three 3 soldiers on the roof yell commands to the waiting crowd below that nobody understands.Judy is asked them to switch on the fan, they do. Return along Talitha Kumi. The tunnel road to Jerusalem is again a stop and go. The road from Talitha Kumi through the mountains to Malcha Shopping Mall is warmly recommended. It’s beautiful and almost empty. There is just one small checkpoint on the way. The soldiers waved us through. We wrote our report we did in a coffeeshop at Hadar Shopping Mall. When I passed the Magnometer at the entrance it rang because of my jewellery. In addition I had my Machsom Watch badge in my hand. The guard wanted to see it. He inspected me throughly and called his superiors: “There is a woman who opposes the Checkpoints here” he said. His superior was not impressed. I was allowed through.
