Bethlehem. El-Hader Ezyon DCO
Bethlehem. El-Hader Ezyon DCO, 17.5.06 morning Observers: Drora P. and Rene R. (reportingDriving: Yoske M.,Guest: Miriam .Rachel’s Passage: We met some people who complained about the gate being open from 6:00, while they have permits to pass as of 5:00. If they opened the gate at 5:00 these people could get to work earlier and not waste so much time waiting at the passage. At Ezyon DCO we met a man who works at the Greek Orthodox Church in the old city. He couldn’t get to work because of the long lines in Rahel passage. El-Khader: They wouldn’t allow vehicles in. The many taxis that stood there moved to the crossroads on the other side. We understood that they were planning on digging a tunnel under the road, and the wall would be next to it. Many people, mostly children, are in danger while walking between the cars that pass the road leading from Hebron to Jerusalem. There wasn’t a traffic officer to help them pass the crowded road. Biet Omer: We handed in some traffic reports that we got from Haia, Abo Nazim will distribute them. Ezyon DCO: The numbers that are handed out so to arrange the lines, are very helpful, but the loudspeakers keep one “screaming” in a terrible volume. We think that we shouldn’t hand out the telephone numbers of army men or police men, to the people who come to the DCO. This doesn’t benefit the Palestinians and it doesn’t help us to help them.

According to Wye Plantation Accords (1997), Hebron is divided in two: H1 is under Palestinian Authority control, H2 is under Israeli control. In Hebron there are 170,000 Palestinian citizens, 60,000 of them in H2. Between the two areas are permanent checkpoints, manned at all hours, preventing Palestinian movement between them and controlling passage of permit holders such as teachers and schoolchildren. Some 800 Jews live in Avraham Avinu Quarter and Tel Rumeida, on Givat HaAvot and in the wholesale market.
Checkpoints observed in H2:
