Abu Dis, Wadi Nar (Container)Tues. 11.10.05 p.m.Observers: Julia W., Rina H, Chana G, Rahel W. (reporting)We first drove up to the Cliff Hotel to see if there were any changes since our last visit. There was a large contingent of border police at the old pishpash and very few people coming or going. We were told that buses and transits are no longer allowed access to the area and that just today (Tuesday) two bus drivers had their vehicles impounded for transporting passengers. Now, with the opening of the new passageway at Az Za’ayyem, steps are being taken to prevent people from using the pishpash. Down the road from the pishpash, the area with that was formerly fenced in (with the fence broken so that people could squeeze through) now is walled in with concrete. However, just below it, there is yet a new opening — a bit more civilized — but manned by a group of border police. No changes at the Cliff Hotel except for yet more neglect. Two or three soldiers or border police were perched on the top floor. No discernible changes in the Moskowitz settlement. We drove to the Container via the new Kedar Road. We arrived at about 3:30 and there was an unusually large amount of traffic – it was nearing dusk in Ramadan and people were hurrying home. The military police and border police functioned efficiently. They pulled over a few vehicles but none waited more than a few minutes.

A checkpoint on Jerusalem’s municipal boundary.

It sits on the separation fence south of Abu Dis. The checkpoint is manned by Border Police soldiers and private security companies and operates 24 hours a day. Palestinians are forbidden to go through, other than residents of the Qunbar and Surhi families who live west of the separation fence, some of whom have blue ID cards and others have entry permits to Jerusalem. Other Palestinians, including residents of East Jerusalem, are not permitted through the checkpoint. Visitors to the families are permitted through the checkpoint only after their hosts obtain permits for them at the checkpoint.
