Deir Sharaf, Sun 31.5.09, Afternoon

Observers: Alix W., Susan L. (reporting)
May-31-2009
| Afternoon

13:10 Deir Sharaf

A lot of fast moving Palestinian vehicles, mainly private cars and taxis, on their way to Nablus. No checking going in, some vehicles stopped on their way out.

Note 1: this checkpoint closes at midnight, as does the checkpoint on route 60 (out of bounds for us), so the so-called "freedom of movement" for Palestinians is circumscribed by their having to be Cinderellas in their own land.

Note 2: Mention has been made earlier of painted boulders at the junction with Route 60 where, in Hebrew, an arrow states that "Area A" is straight ahead (in the direction of the former Beit Iba checkpoint) and a second garish yellow fluorescent maker states, again of course, in Hebrew, that "Shavei Shomron" is to the left. We infer from this that settlers make their way frequently towards Homesh? Unfortunately, we cannot provide eye witness data!

    • Deir Sharaf checkpoint is located west of Nablus and south of the settlement of Shavei Shomron, at the entrance to the village of Deir Sharaf on the road leading to Nablus. The checkpoint was activated in early March 2009 after the Beit Iba checkpoint was closed. Palestinians are allowed through the checkpoint , but not for Israelis. Unlike the checkpoints leading to Qalqilya and Tulkarm, crossing of Israeli Palestinians is only allowed on Saturdays.
