Bethlehem and vicinity, Wednesday PM, 13.6.07Observers: Daniela G., Ronit B., Lea E. (reporting)Etzion DCL, 16:00: Some 15 men in the parking lot still hoping for a chance to file request for a magnetic card. They do have numbers -100 were handed out in the morning, but after less than 50 cards the machine broke down again and they were told to come back next morning with the numbers they already had. About ten people inside the new air conditioned (!) waiting hall. After a few minutes, the people waiting for permits are let in. The others are either too young to apply for a magnetic card or have “GSS refused” written on their request form. Outside again, 3 men are waiting since 9 AM for their IDs to be returned by the GSS. An elderly man is with them, waiting for his sister who has been inside with the GSS since early morning. Her husband is in detention at the Russian compound in Jerusalem, having been caught in the city with no permit. We try to plead with the secretary at the GSS, especially on the woman’s behalf, as she’s left small children at home, one of them a baby. Bethlehem CP, 16:50: 2 stations are open and within a few minutes a third one is manned. The usual barking is heard over the loudspeakers but crossing is fast.
