For the hour and a half that we were there, people came needing an office, waited ten minutes and entered.The matron of Beit Jala monastery tries to get the abbot, who lives in the Territories, a general permit that will allow him to reach the monastery at night if something’s wrong. She’s been working on it since the morning, but encounters a bureaucratic wall. She is being sent back and forward to the Ministry of the Interior. Dvora tries to help and speaks with the Ministry of the Interior official.Next to the Shabak and work passes gate stand a father and son. The son tried to go to Jordan to study in the university there, but was sent back and summoned to Shabak today. At 09:00 he reported in, his ID was taken from him until 14:00, nobody called him or approached. The guard on the gate claims that he cannot phone the Shabak, the soldier on the tower also doesn’t cooperate with us.I phoned the IDF Humanitarian Centre. The woman soldier will try to help, but she comes back a few minutes later and says that the Shabak don’t know what it is about, and the father and son have to wait. While she is talking to me on the phone, a young man (apparently Shabak) appears at the gate and calls the father and son, talks to them, and vanishes. We wait, happy that someone is showing an interest. After ten minutes the young man comes back and gives them a form – they are to return here on October 5. Studies in the university begin on October 1. I call Yael S., who immediately volunteers to help, talks to the father, takes the details – including the father’s phone number.A young man arrives – he has been told that a work permit awaits him. There is no one to talk to. I phone the man responsible for work permits, he tells me not to intervene in his work but, after a few minutes, he appears at the gate. He shouts at me that I have no right to call him at 14:00: “perhaps also at 17:00 you’ll phone and ask me to deal with applicants?”Obviously I do not remain silent, and I explain to him that there is no sign anywhere stating his work hours. He tries to evade dealing with the young man, but finally goes to see if his name appears in the computer.[LW]
