Bethlehem and vicinity, Wednesday PM, 27.7.05Observers: Laura S., Daniela G. (reporting).Summary: A frustrating shift since we could only look on and be of no use because of the closure. The entrance to road 60: Quite a traffic jam because of two soldiers checking the vehicles on their way to the Gush.Etzion DCO: Some people in the shed, some on the steps behind the turnstile, some at the windows. The soldier on the roof consents to turning the fans on upon our calling out to him and reminding him. On the other hand, he will not as yet press the button to let people in to the windows. A couple, he an American citizen, she from Bethlehem, would like to go to the Embassy on the morrow to apply for immigration for the bride to be. She needs a permit though her magnetic card has expired. When they are finally let in, along with the others waiting behind the turnstile, they are told to come back tomorrow at 8:00 because today there is a closure. Angry, they try to go around to the gate to talk to A., but after a while, give up. Other people come out with the same verdict: closure, nothing to be done. Some five men are still waiting inside, at least one of them a humanitarian case. They’ve been told they will get what they came for. One of them looks at the writing on our badge, smiles wryly and says: There are no human rights here. You have a tough job if that is what you are after.Bet Jalla CP: Traffic flows as usual. The soldiers are wary of us and they too wonder about human rights, except they want to know if we are for their human rights as well. They affirm that there is closure, but it does not change anything at their CP.Bethlehem CP: A man is sitting in his car next to the interrogation caravan. He had given a lift to a woman who did not have a permit to be in Jerusalem. Now they are all detained. The driver, the woman and her 4 children. A BP soldier comes up to us and bids us not to speak to the man. We try to resist but know the drill. So do the man and the woman. He tries to take a nap in the car and she on the bench in the shed next to the interrogation caravan
