Checkpoint of Hawarra and a road checkpoint,Saturday 20.8.05 PMObservers: Nurit L. Chava H. Vivi Z. (reporting)Natanya translating14.00-16.30No segregation at the checkpoint of Tapuach but the segregation between Ramallah and Nablus has passed to the checkpoint of Shaar Benjamin. This is on Road 60 north east of Jerusalem and before the road leading to Jaba, checkpoints of Kalandia and Ramallah. Our driver, a Palestinian with a blue id tells us that during the week this is a very difficult checkpoint and people coming from Nablus to Ramallah are only allowed to pass with special permits. Today there is no checkpoint. From the new checkpoints we saw one manned and with red cement blocks on the crossroads of the of the road going up to Yizhar, similar to the one at the crossroads leading to Beit Iba. Another checkpoint with green cement blocks on Road 60 turning to Rachaliem. We did not see any cars which had been detained maybe because of the disengagement and it being the Sabbath. At the wretched crossroad of Tapuach there was no line at 2.00 and at 4.30 about 30 cars in the southern direction. The wall. Kfar Hisma north east of Jerusalem is supposed to be outside the wall. A part of the wall is being built at the entrance to the village . It is in tow parts and we saw at the opening a sort of gate built of planks which reminds us of long gone movies.Hawarra 14.00-16.30- Palestinians from Jerusalem with a blue id pass with no problem. The checking is very careful but people pass quickly. The soldiers work very well under the excellent commander Urie. No detainees. The computer police continue to work and all written material including even the paper El Kuds is checked out but there was no confiscation. A young boy had a keyholder placed on gun barrel taken from him. He did not want to give it up but the soldiers would not give it back to him as they said that there was ammunition in the barrel. Cars have a long wait because of the careful checking. An unexpected delay can creat a long queue of cars and people waiting for hours.

    • A perimeter checkpoint west of the city of Nablus. Operated from 2001 to 2009 as one of the four permanent checkpoints closing on Nablus: Beit Furik and Awarta to the east and Hawara to the south. A pedestrian-only checkpoint, where MachsomWatch volunteers were present daily for several hours in the morning and afternoon to document the thousands of Palestinians waiting for hours in long queues with no shelter in the heat or rain, to leave the district city for anywhere else in the West Bank. From March 2009, as part of the easing of the Palestinian movement in the West Bank, it was abolished, without a trace, and without any adverse change in the security situation.
