Hebron, Jerusalem
Abu Dis Tuesday 30.8.05 AMObservers: Yael L.I., Michaela R., Yael N. (reporting).Summary 06:45 – 09:45: Since yesterday (29.8.05) an intensified cutting down of trees and destroying stone terraces and supporting walls has been going on in the Passionatta monastery area and the nearby school. All this is in preparation for the wall, which is supposed to be built exactly there. In the background, the Attorney General’s decision of last week to authorize the course of the wall so that it will encircle Ma’ale Adumim and vast additional areas. It seems the pace of erecting the wall in Jerusalem is also accelerated.06:45, Wadi Nar (Container)No significant queues of vehicles, and traffic flows. A bus from Hebron is stopped by the soldiers. The passengers, women and children only, are on their way to spend a fun day in Jericho. The women with their children get off the bus and are checked in the pedestrian lane through the turnstiles. A 15-minute delay. This is the fourth CP they have gone through this morning (in Hebron, Halhul and Bet Jallah), and they will have to stop at the morning CP in the outskirts of Al-Ezariya and perhaps in Mishor Adumim as well. A soldier sends back the vehicles that have arrived from the direction of the new road. The road is a one-way street, from Sawahre CP towards southeast only. The road is narrow and curvy and is unsuitable for the heavy traffic in this direction.07:30 Al-Ezariya7 taxis in line, one of them is detained. All in all traffic flows.08:15 The PishpashA shocking sight is revealed, that of the cutting down of olive trees and the destroying of the terraces and the wall separating the monastery area from the street. The picture is of amputated olive trees and piles of branches smelling of fresh cut leaves. In front of our eyes, a bulldozer demolishes more and more stone fences and turns them into heaps of rubble. Security-people, dressed in black uniform and wearing a cap saying “Security” on it, know nothing. “It is none of our business. It is the Palestinians’ affair”. The Palestinians tell us that since yesterday the preparation of the area for the building of the wall has begun. The wall will actually tear apart the large aluminum store. The owner is reducing his business and slowly laying-off his employees. A BP-man is standing nearby and checks those coming into the area. Next to him there is an additional security man and a group of security guys in black assuming an active role in the “CP” functioning. This is an extra CP on top on the regular jeep down the road, about a hundred meters away. The BP-man lets some of those with permits through. But others with valid permits were not allowed to pass. We called Elisha of the DCO who was courteous and willing to help. Permits issued before 28.8 are not valid anymore. Their holders have to go back to the DCO and renew them and “there’s no problem”. The people we have waiting here are from Hebron and it is obvious they will not get any permits at the Abu Dis DCO. At this point we turned to A. from the BP who was courteous as well and promised to send an officer to settle the matter. At 09:35 there were no more people waiting and the policeman had gone as well.09:40 The gate next to the gas stationThere is a tiny gap torn in the metal board welded to the gate (see last reports). In order to pass through one has to bend down and squeeze into the narrow opening, which is even more humiliating than jumping over the Pishpash. 4 soldiers are posted there, checking the IDs of those crossing in that manner. For want of time we did not stay long.

According to Wye Plantation Accords (1997), Hebron is divided in two: H1 is under Palestinian Authority control, H2 is under Israeli control. In Hebron there are 170,000 Palestinian citizens, 60,000 of them in H2. Between the two areas are permanent checkpoints, manned at all hours, preventing Palestinian movement between them and controlling passage of permit holders such as teachers and schoolchildren. Some 800 Jews live in Avraham Avinu Quarter and Tel Rumeida, on Givat HaAvot and in the wholesale market.
Checkpoints observed in H2:
- Bet Hameriva CP- manned with a pillbox
- Kapisha quarter CP (the northern side of Zion axis) - manned with a pillbox
- The 160 turn CP (the southern side of Zion axis) - manned with a pillbox
- Avraham Avinu quarter - watch station
- The pharmacy CP - checking inside a caravan with a magnometer
- Tarpat (1929) CP - checking inside a caravan with a magnometer
- Tel Rumeida CP - guarding station
- Beit Hadassah CP - guarding station
