Huwwara
Hawarra, Beit Furik, 20.3.2006, Monday PMObservers: Macky S. Michal S. (reporting)Natanya translating.12.35 At the entrance opposite Marda is an army vehicle. The entrance to Zeita is open as usual to pedestrians. The entrance to the cars on the other side is closed and the iron gate blocks the passage.12.45 Crossroads of Tapuach. Two trucks pass after being checked. The woman soldier with the dog has no work for the moment.13.00 We stopped at Beita where the people tell us that the army were there at 5.30 in the morning, searched a few houses and went on to the next village. Beita El-Foka (upper Beita). A young man from the village says that the army took some houses, boys threw stones at the soldiers who returned with shots. An old Palestinian woman shows us her nephew whose brow and mouth were wounded when the soldiers were chasing someone ( this she told us with the help of someone who spoke English) . The road to Beita Foka has been closed courtesy of the army by a mound of earth.13.10 -At Beita El-Foka is an army vehicle next to house which has been taken by the procedure of “grass widow”. The army “guards” us while we speak to the villagers who wish to complain about what has happened to them. It is interesting to note that our flag and sign are well known. But we found to our sorrow that there was no way we could help. 13.20 Crossorads of Yizhar…five cars.13.45 Hawarra checkpoint. We timed a bus that was there when we arrived. It took an hour to pass and we do not know how long it had to wait before we arrived.14.00 -The humanitarian line is bursting with women and children. We hear shouts and crying from this line. Women with four children try to get a dispensation to pass without standing in this line but nothing helps them and also our requests are fruitless. We did not check but the young people said it took them two and half hours to pass.14.30 – We spoke to G., the spokesman of the brigade and told him two women in the line had fainted. He said he would see what he could do.15.15 Beit Furik. The soldiers are bored and there are no cars nor people.15.35 Checkpoint Hawarra. The phone call to Gil helped and another lane was opened by reinforcements who had arrived and the humanitarian line flows. At the crossroads of the market (the former southern checkpoint) a soldier stops trucks and taking the ids sends them into the warroom. This is because the area from which they come , Beit Furik. Is an apartheid road which they are forbidden to travel on . He refuses to free them until he has had an answer.16.00 We succeed in persuading him to return the id of a women who was in a truck and let her go on her way but the driver has to wait.16.20 -Crossroad Yizhar-Hawarra 10 cars.16.30 On our way back we did not stop again at Beita because Hanna B. told us that there was no need as she was in close contact with the army.

Marda
There are about 2500 inhabitants in the village. A large part of their lands was confiscated for the benefit of the settlement of Ariel, some of whose buildings are adjacent to the village.
They often feel under siege. At both entrances to the village from the main road (505) there are checkpoints and the army does close the yellow arms from time to time. The inhabitants of Marda own olive groves behind a fence. Rarely are they allowed to cultivate their agricultural plots
