Huwwara, Wednesday 20.4.2005, PMWatchers: Debra L. Eilat B. Amira A. reportingOn our way to Huwwara we went to Sarra but there was no one there. Two soldiers came down to meet us.Special happenings: The line of cars going out of Nublus wait about an hour and a half. Only one detainee for the whole period of the watch.14.15 People pass with no particular problems. One soldier checks the humanitarian line, two soldiers check the documents and two others check belongings at the humanitarian line. 2 soldiers check the cars leaving Nublus and two other check those going in.One of the soldiers checking at the humanitarian line checks a young man carrying many cellular phones and asks the price as if he wants to buy one. The young man is embarrassed. The soldier sees me watching, pats him on the shoulder and sends him on his way. When we arrive 2 cars have been detained by the police. The police claim they are stolen. We try to get closer to find out what is happening but are sent back. The police say we are interfering in their duties, the soldiers seem tense because of the prescence of the police. A mercedes is also detained according to the soldiers because of a large sum of money.Debra tries to check if it is legal for the police to detain people for “criminal” reasons and receives a reply from R’ that it is ok.One car remains…..the Ariel removal takes it away and the other two cars are freed.15.54 The police leave.Because we were still trying to find if what the police was doing was legal, the soldiers become more inimical and will not even let us stand at the checking area.A car arrives and gives gifts wrapped in the Kahanistic yellow to the soldiers and one of them comes towards us and shouts “Fuck yourself.” 15.30 A soldier takes up position at the front of the checkpoint and checks people going into Nublus randomly. Any man who does not notice this is called back “Hi come here” and this goes on for about an hour.16.30 E’ who is in command calls this soldier to come back to the magnetic line. A detainee is kept for a few minutes and freed.A young woman accompanied by two friends asks us for help. On Monday at 11.30 her young brother had his id taken from him and not returned. We could not understand why he had gone without her to Baita. Eran said they did not have the document and Debra took her details and said she would try to find out what had happened. The line of cars leaving Nublus is very slow. Drivers tell us it takes an hour and a half to pass. We try to contact Raad. The soldiers do not let us communicate with the DCO, C’ who is checking the drivers. we phone various numbers. The SAMGAD of the unit and eventually the military spokesman. Y’ takes our call and says that we have been disturbing the checker but after that the line seemed to move. Two cars are checked at once. Before that we were told that this is impossible.18.00 Few people and cars passing. We go to Beit Furik.18.30 Few people passing. The soldiers claim that they stopped a young man with a knife….crazy and they let him go.Crossroads Tapuach. 9 cars in a line. The reserve soldiers pass them through quickly. 2 girls one with a Kahanist shirt and another with a baby strapped to her curse us. The young girl spits and calls us traitors.

The Huwwara checkpoint is an internal checkpoint south of the city of Nablus, at the intersection of Roads 60 and 5077 (between the settlements of Bracha and Itamar). This checkpoint was one of the four permanent checkpoints that closed on Nablus (Beit Furik and Awarta checkpoints to the east and the Beit Iba checkpoint to the west). It was a pedestrian-only barrier. As MachsomWatch volunteers, we watched therre since 2001 two shifts a day - morning and noon, the thousands of Palestinians leaving Nablus and waiting for hours in queues to reach anywhere else in the West Bank, from the other side of the checkpoint the destination could only be reached by public transport. In early June 2009, as part of the easing of Palestinian traffic in the West Bank, the checkpoint was opened to vehicular traffic. The passage was free, with occasional military presence in the guard tower. Also, there were vehicle inspections from time to time. Since the massacre on 7.10.2023, the checkpoint has been closed to Palestinians.
On February 26, 2023, about 400 settlers attacked the town's residents for 5 hours and set fire to property, such as houses and cars. Disturbances occurred in response to a shooting of two Jewish residents of Har Bracha by a Palestinian Terrorist. The soldiers stationed in the town did not prevent the arson and rescued Palestinian families from their homes only after they were set on fire. No one was punished and Finance Minister Smotrich stated that "the State of Israel should wipe out Hawara." Left and center organizations organized solidarity demonstrations and support actions for the residents of Hawara.Hawara continued to be in the headlines in all the months that followed: more pogroms by the settlers, attacks by Palestinians and a massive presence of the army in the town. It amounted to a de facto curfew of commerce and life in the center of the city. On October 5, 2023, MK Zvi established a Sukkah in the center of Hawara and hundreds of settlers backed the army blocked the main road and held prayers in the heart of the town all night and the next day. On Saturday, October 7, 23 The "Swords of Iron" war began with an attack by Hamas on settlements surrounding Gaza in the face of a poor presence of the IDF. Much criticism has been made of the withdrawal of military forces from the area surrounding Gaza and their placement in the West Bank, and in the Hawara and Samaria region in particular, as a shield for the settlers who were taking over and rioting.
On November 12, 2023, the first section of the Hawara bypass road intended for Israeli traffic only was opened. In this way, the settlers can bypass the road that goes through the center of Hawara, which is the main artery for traffic from the Nablus area to Ramallah and the south of the West Bank. For the construction of the road, the Civil Administration expropriated 406 dunams of private land belonging to Palestinians from the nearby villages. The settlers are not satisfied with this at the moment, and demand to also travel through Hawara itself in order to demonstrate presence and control.(updated November 2023)
