(reporting)Natanya translating.Yifat is arrested by the police and sent to the jail at Naveh Tirztah.A Palestinian from Gaza who had had open heart surgery in Nablus and left the hospital at 12.00 goes from checkpoint to checkpoint, is sent back to Hawarra and lies in the parking area waiting for permission to go home. Very very hot. 14.25 -Captains go out on a patrol next to the western fence of Marda. At Zaatra are 24 cars in different directions, a blue police jeep next to the hitching spot and 3 checking areas. Yizhar Hawarra is empty and on road 60 are 2 soldiers checking 4 cars. 14.45 -As soon as we arrive the commander distances us from our usual place (south of the turnstiles of those leaving Nablus who have passed the check) and afterwards it turns out that he has called in the police.There are two turnstiles and the commander says that he ends to open a third but during our entire shift this does not happen. 2 turnstiles, about 40 people standing in the heat and a side line for women and older men. Now and again a pedestrian is sent to the x-ray machine and they have to go a round about route to get there. No representative of the DCO was there during our entire shift ( we saw his car at about 20.00 when we left the parking lot and went in the direction of the DCO as we will report later). At the entrance to Nablus cars pass fairly quickly but those leaving are checked slowly and there is a break between each check. 10 cars in line.Two elderly women from Tira are detained on their way home because they went into Nablus without permits and we were told that the police would come to interrogate them. In the isolation are 3 men because of id numbers which are being checked. One of them was a man who had been among the 250 freed and one who was there for education as he had cheeked the commander and had been there for an hour. We saw that education took two hours.A policeman and a policewoman arrested Ifat. We had seen no provocation from her side. As soon as we arrived the commander who had obviously been waiting for us came to the shaded area of the checkpoint and told us that we were not allowed to stand there. Daphna, the reporter and Chaya our guest went with Yifat to the police station.At the parking area people again ask for toilets, water and shade.16.40 Beit Furik. A drover complains about the slow checking at the checkpoint in the last few days. The vulgar way the soldiers speak. We see pedestrians and cars who do not wait long. We are told of a yellow gate at Nablus which people bang into and which injures them. We tell the commander and he says he will check and try to remedy this. 17.00 Huwwara. Now there are less people and cars. All passengers alight from a bus. In the isolation still sits the young man who was detained for being cheeky and is freed some minutes after our arrival. There is also an elderly man there for the same reason. The commander promises not to hold him for long. A man from the parking lot comes to ask us to help a Palestinian from Gaza who has been freed from hospital that day after open heart surgery. He and his wife had a permit from the 10.7.2007 – 18.7.2007 but the hospitalization took longer. Only today he received his release and since 12.00 has been trying to return to Gaza. He had been stopped at Qalandiya and sent back. Now he was lying on the ground at Huwwara. There are pictures. The usual army centre to which we usually turn does not deal with people from Gaza. So we phoned the centre at Gaza who told us to phone a man who deals with these permits but his office was closed and also from his private phone there was no answer. Zecharia tried to help, Daphna, the reporter but the DCO at Nablus was closed until Sunday. The man lay on the ground.Chanah B. managed to bring about the miracle. 19.55 -We were sent to the closed DCO at Nablus (where the guard in the tower post told us not to come near) , a apparition appeared and Matan gave he necessary permits.Gamal accompanied us…an Arab taxi driver from Faradies…he was supposed to be today at a wedding of his niece but because he saw the condition of the man he said he had decided to wait as long as it took so as to take the couple home and that he would not take money for the trip. 20.00 Yitzhar empty and 15 cars on road 60. Za’atara -9 cars and one checking post.20.30 -At the entrance t o Mardah a jeep with lights and a Hummer also with the lights on. 21.18 we left Ariel after having been at the police station and being told that Yfat had been sent to jail. 23.00 -Jamal phoned to say that the man and his wife had gone through Erez.Closing of Beit Furik -(addition to the report of Huwwara and Beit Furik)Observers: Tamar F., Chaya R. Daphna stood parallel to the turnstiles from where we can see those waiting and the checking areas . at the side and the cement blocks which divide us from the Palestinians and the soldiers. Besides greeting them we did not speak to the soldiers.One of them, evidently the commander, asked Daphna to move back and se did so coming to stand with us aout 3 metres from the post of the soldiers and 6 from that of the Palestinians on the path on which the Palestinians walk after being checked. After a few minutes the same commander came up to us and demanded that we go even further back to the end of the checkpoint. This is where the turnstiles for those coming from Beit Furik are after they have been checked.We refused as from there we would not be able to see or hear what is happening and then the soldiers suggested to us that we enter the closed booth which is opposite the passage from where we could see but not hear and to this also we refused. The commander then stopped the Palestinians from passing. He and his friends began to joke and one of them who had a beard a few days old said that the whole happening amused him very much. We phoned the humanitarian centre of the civil administration and said that the Palestinians were not being allowed to ass. In the meantime more and more people arrived and amongst them women with babies in their arms. It was very hot, 34 % and so after 20 minutes we left so as not to have innocent people suffer.
