including Anata and Hizme
Anata/Hizme/Qalandiya, 17.7.05 pm Watchers: Roni H. – Norah O. (reporting)guest: Elizabeth W. from New YorkToday we decide to take a different route, which includes Anata where we have not been for several months, as well as Hizme, where we want to see the local section of the Separation Wall, which in our area is called ‘The Jerusalem Envelope’.Anata15:30 – we find 3 detainees sitting on the ground next to the checkpoint. Two of them tried to by-pass the checkpoint along the hill nearby and got caught there – the third one was caught near the Shoafat Refugee Camp for being illegally in what is considered Jerusalem area. So far, they have been retained for an hour and ten minutes. We ask the cp commander, Halabi, to speed up the checking of their identity cards with the computer. Half-an-hour later, they are called one by one to go over to him, in order to have their ids returned to them, but not before they sign a statement saying, that they have not been physically abused. Halabi gives each of them some prolonged pep talk, before releasing them. The man who has been caught near Shoafat tells us later, that he is about to get married, and therefore needs money. He cannot afford to be particular about the geography of the location, where work is being offered.HizmeFrom Anata we continue to Hizme, where we take an eye-full of the two segments of the Separation Wall which have already been erected and which will eventually be connected to the rest. Again we experience the first shock of seeing a wall, which separates the village in two parts. The ration behind this escapes us, except that forever the confiscation of as much land as possible is always the reason behind every other explanation. From there we drive to Qalandiya on the road leading through the Adam junction. At the junction, we are overjoyed to discover, that the access to the village Jab’a is open in all directions! – For years, we saw the heaps of rubble and garbage blocking the several entrances, and in particular the one under the bridge near the junction. A month ago, the tunnel was cleared from all obstacles, and the cars can once more drive through it.Qalandiya17:30 – the usual chaos at the roundabout! The peddlers have stalls in every free spot in adjoining the checkpoint. The cp is not particularly crowded – 3 lanes are activated for pedestrians going south: 2 for men, 1 for women and handicapped or elderly people. We leave at 19:00.
