Irtah, Ar-Ras, Anabta, Thursday, 6.7.06 AMObservers: Nora R, Chana P (reporting) Irtah 07:00 – a lot of vehicles waiting for workers. In answer to our questions, we are told that the place is functioning okay. 07:10 – on our way to A-Ras we see two soldiers at what used to be the Agricultural Gate of Jubara. We ask what their function is now that the inspections are at Ar-Ras. They say they are checking illegals who cross through the hills. Ar-RasThe instructions: a permit is needed for Jubara. The direction of Tulkarm is free. In the direction of Qalqiliya, ages 16-35 have their IDs checked over the radio. In response to our question, the commander explains that by this route it is possible to reach Jerusalem, and from there the way to Israel is wide open. He tells us that he recently participated in a course for checkpoint commanders. They were told what is permissible, and what forbidden – for example, not to delay people without cause. Anabta08:30 – no special restrictions, no lines. According to the checkpoint commander, only people who are impertinent are detained. What is impertinence? Excessive self-confidence. The commander contends that he is already five months at the checkpoint and he feels worn down.An Israeli family asks to enter Tulkarm, to visit relatives. Usually Israeli cars are not allowed, but because there are children in the car the commander lets them through.
