Jalama 27/5/2004 Watchers: Tamar Y., Shifra G. (reporting) The main activity was back-to-back exchange of merchandise. We observed only two men that passed to work in Israeli territory. The attitude of the soldiers was decent. The people who passed from Jalama to Israeli territory had to wait till the soldiers finished their lunch. No special incidents except for an emotional (chance) meeting with Tamar’s friend from Jalama. Also, we met a group of pro-Israel Christian Germans who came to see the building of the fence. In a conversation with them, it became apparent that they have a lot of distorted information, such as the information that Palestinian children are killed because they hang around next to Israeli tanks, etc. There are signs (on the road) saying (in Hebrew, Arabic and English) that Israelis are forbidden to pass through the checkpoint, by order of the regional IDF commander — they are forbidden to enter Jalama, unless they received individual authorization from the qualified authorities. (The signs don’t indicate who those authorities are.) Needless to say, the residents of Ganim and Cadim settlements pass freely through the checkpoint.

North of Jenin, on the Green Line between Israel and the West Bank. A big terminal for the passage of Palestinians with permits allowing entrance into Israel and goods into Israel operates there. In the course of 2009 the terminal was opened for the passage of Israeli Arabic citizens into the West Bank. Since October 2009 they may pass in their cars.
