Jalama, Shaked, Rihan, Sunday, October 2, 2005, AMObservers: Raia. Z., Neta G., (reporting)Jalama, 05.55-06.05Closure – the checkpoint is deserted. The soldiers inform us that the “back to back” lot will open at 08.00, and when there are family visits to the prisoners, they also go through the lot, along with humanitarian cases, employees of international organizations and the workers of the sewing workshop in Jalame.Shaked, 07.00-07.40The gate opens on time. First those who hold agricultural permits from Tura (West Bank) pass through, on their way to their plots in the seam line zone (west of the partition wall, Israel). Next the soldiers call the school children, one by one, their school bags are inspected, even that of a four year old girl. At Raia’s request, they agreed to inspect them in pairs. The soldiers are pleasant and do not insist that the children stay back away from the gate. The new Salem District Coordination Office (DCO) commander, Colonel Fares and Major Basem arrive at the gate and introduce themselves to us. Fares forsees three particular problems in the near future: the olive harvest, the month of Ramadan and the Palestinian Daylight Saving Time. He tells the soldiers there is no need to inspect the school children’s bags as they leave for school in the West Bank, only on their return to the seam line zone. By 07.40 all the children have crossed over, including one teacher.Rihan Checkpoint 07.50-08.50Only minor pedestrian traffic. All Rihan checkpoint permit holders are allowed through. We meet Fares and Bassem again. Fares tells us that the construction of the terminal at Rihan is completed and once the contractor completes the necessary modifications the building will be opened. The construction of the Jalama terminal should be completed in November.Six or seven cars at a time are waiting at the vehicle checkpoint; waiting time is about 15-20 minutes.Detainees: When we arrived there were three detainees. They were immediately released when Fares arrived. Before we left there were three additional detainees; they were released when we left.

    • North of Jenin, on the Green Line between Israel and the West Bank. A big terminal for the passage of Palestinians with permits allowing entrance into Israel and goods into Israel operates there. In the course of 2009 the terminal was opened for the passage of Israeli Arabic citizens into the West Bank. Since October 2009 they may pass in their cars.
