Abu Dis & the Container Wednesday PM, 28.12.05Observers: Laura S., Tami B., Daniela G. (reporting).Summary: Again, not much to report.Abu Dis: The “new Pishpash” is still sealed, at the old Pishpash 3 BP soldiers check IDs of all those climbing over the stones into the Jerusalem side. They are rude, send back in ugly aggressive tones an elderly man and woman, both pleading to be let through, and we loudly comment that they could once in a while also use the little word “please” instead of just bark “ID”. Only blue ID holders or those having a Tasrich (permit) can go through. On the other side, a bulldozer (operated by a Palestinian of course) is moving concrete blocks so as to close an opening the Palestinians used to drive through. The by standers are angry. At us too, for not being able to do anything about it. Lots of construction going on all around, definitely for the wall. Even so, the locals have found a way to circumvent the 3 nasty BP soldiers, climbing over the school fence and passing through one of the private yards, and that’s always some kind of comfort. The Container: Very little traffic, no lines, a nice and very efficient BP soldier waves most of the vehicles through, and randomly holds up, for ten minutes at the most, taxis/transits while their passengers’ IDs are checked. And what a change of attitude! He not only initiates a conversation, but that in order to tell us not to worry, his checking is random, if they are students they have to write down what and where they’re studying, and Lo and Behold, he also invites us to come closer and says we can stand anywhere we liked!
