.BEthlehem and vacinity-Wednesday, NOv. 17,04 PMObservers: TB.,LS.,IH., DG (reporting)Hebron Rd. in Jerusalem – 3:15: 2 female BP were holding up a bus load of people on their way back to Bethlehem, checking IDs and permits. Some of the women have no permits to be in Jerusalem. As we approach, the attitude of the BP girls changes from nastiness to a reasonable one. According to procedure, if those with no permits are not on the “wanted” list, they sign a form and are sent on their way. A young woman who admitted she had snuck into Jerusalem knowing well she was not allowed to, complained she did not understand why she couldn’t travel freely and needed a permit, and was reluctant to sign anything. “Luckily” for her, a young boy who had been hit by a car is suddenly on the scene, all the attention of the by now 4 BP girls is turned to him, the IDs were returned and the bus drove off. On our way back, some two hours later, the BP were still there, now detaining some 5-6 young men, going through the same motions. The girls answer all our questions pleasantly.DCO Etzyon : All 3 windows are open but though there is just one elderly man waiting, the soldiers take their time and make him stand in the pouring rain till they finally let him through the turnstile. The waiting area is relatively clean, the toilets not too smelly.Etzyon CP : No one there, as usual.Bethlehem CP 300: Very little traffic goes through in both directions, no pedestrians. New barriers have been set up and a huge sign explaining the rules of entry.
