Jerusalem
Abu Dis, ContainerThursday, 23.2.06, AMObservers: Aviva W., Rama Y. (reporting)Abu Dis. No soldiers in sight, and people are jumping down the stone wall, at what used to be the old Pishpash gate. It was our first time to venture over this wall, in order to take a taxi to Wadi Nar ( the Container) in the Palestinian zoneï of Abu Dis. It is about 1.5 meters in height, and quite narrow; one has to climb and make few steps on it, and then step down carefully on the other side. And this is the main passage to the Israeli zone of Abu Dis and to Jerusalem for hundreds of people daily, for the elderly, the handicapped, people carrying luggage, young children on their way to school. And yet, the new Zeitim Passage about to open soon will probably be even worse, as Palestinians will be obliged to make a huge detour eastward instead of simply heading west. The Container. Traffic flows. All minibuses are detained while passengers IDs are being checked with the GSS. This procedure doesn’t take more than 10 minutes. In the taxi, on our way back to Abu Dis, there was a couple, an elderly man, his nose and mouth covered by a scarf, and a young woman. The driver told us they were on their way to El Mukassed Hospital – the man was to be operated on – and asked us to help the couple with the soldiers. We followed the two as they went up slowly the longer way, through the monastery. Fortunately enough, there were still no soldiers, and the two were picked right away by a car.
