Jerusalem
Qalandiya, June 23, PMWatchers: Edna K, Martha K, Lia NThe vendors said the demonstration the previous dayhelped while it lasted, but they had been harassedagain, though not violently. An army jeep passing bysaid they knew they couldn’t stand in the middle ofthe intersection, and pointed out where they AREallowed to stand, near the hill where the taxis park. The checkpoint itself was quiet – an Israeli whodefinitely looked like an activist was detained on hisway back to Jerusalem. He said he’d come from KufrAkeb, where, as he cleverly pointed out, there areexcellent places for humus. Tal, the checkpointcommander, said she knew that this area was actuallypart of Jerusalem, but “Jews are not allowed to passthrough Qalandiya” (!) A quick phone-call toheadquarters confirmed that this guy could go on hisway.Fares showed up in dress uniform, he’d been at aSupreme Court hearing about the wall. He mentionedhe’ll be stationed in North Samaria soon, obviously forthe disengagement. An hour later three kids with orange T-shirts appearedat the checkpoint, where they handed out chocolatesto the soldiers. Tal said they had to leave (“nopolitics at the CP”). Their shirts had the words”Ma’asiyahu Summer Camp” printed in front, and one ofthe girls boasted a handmade silver pin given only tothose who’ve already been arrested. At one point there was an argument between thePalestinian men about the queue – the soldier startedyelling at them and telling them who should stand infront of whom. When we asked why he interfered, hequite seriously said – “Justice must be served!”
