Qallandiya and Ar-Ram, 27.4.05 AM Observers: Anat T, Maya B (reporting)6;30 we turn from road 443 towards Qallandiya and see a C.P and close to 100 cars moving very slowly , a lot of cars blowing their horn , and two soldiers checking them. We walk over just as their commander arrives, his name is Bennie , and ask if it is possible to speed up the procedure, which he promises to try and do. He also explains to us that last night at 12;30 a suspect was caught after hours of chasing him and that there are a lot of warnings in the Jerusalem area. We move on to Qallandiya, the place looks cleaner then in the past. I spoke to the Director General of the Jerusalem Municipality, Eitan Meir, and asked him to improve the cleaning routine around the check point, which is filthy and a disgrace to the city, and he took it upon himself to have it cleaned. I also spoke to the man in charge of sanitary services, whose name is BenZion, who also promised to take it into his hands, and I think there are some improvements. The construction of the new border C.P. is in full force. The lines at the C.P. are short, a lot of children crossing to go on their outing to Arara, about 5 buses of children,( may be some normalisation?). The soldiers are pleasant and we meet Benzi from the DCO, whom we know from all the times we call him on the phone. He is always trying to help. Then we go on to Ar-Ram. Always problematic! It is already 8 a.m. a few detainies, whose sin is their trying to find some work in the city, without having the famous permit. Among them is a young woman, H with her stepmother, who has no I.D. or any other identification. She has cancer of the ovary and needs to go to Augusta Victoria hospital for radiation. Her hospital papers were taken by one of the B.P.men and we waited for him to return. The commander of the C.P. arrives, tries to find her on the computor, but she is not registered anywhere. She is not allowed to go to the hospital. We try every number we can think of, civil rights, red cross, humanitarien centre for health problems, ‘bezelem’ …. but to no avail. Nobody without an identification can go through, regardless of his or her problem. We felt bad, we tried for an hour and a half and in the end advised her to go to Beth El which is being renovated, and ! hardly functions.
