Bethlehem and surroundings, Sunday, 6.11.2005, AMObservers: Silvia P. Ofra B. Hana A. (reporting)Bethlehem CP, 07:10 There are almost no pedestrians, but a few cars are queuing. The curfew is still enforced, and there is almost no way to go to Jerusalem. – 7:30 A few people are waiting for us and we are writing 6 letters to Colonel Lotshtein. Silvia zeroxes the documents. Some people ask when they can expect an answer. Everything takes a very long time, and there is not much hope for an affirmative answer. When we were ready to leave, a person called us. During the holiday we gave him the good news about the removal of the GSS restriction. He is actually a few meters away from us carrying in his pocket the blue magnetic card, which he got a few minutes before that at the DCO…. poor people’s happiness. Beit-Omar – 9:30 One of the people showed us the house of a child who was wounded in a car accident. He told us that an Israeli bus on the way from Jerusalem to Kiryat-Arba, hit the child on road 60. The child was hospitalizes 8 months at Hadasa and was released on July 2005. The child is back to almost full activity, but still limited in his movements. He lives on the western side of road 60, and has a long way to school. There is a dirt road from his house to road 60, and until recently a school minibus would come to pick him up. But now the IDF blocked the passage in the middle of the dirt road (near the first house on the side of the way) with an earth mound. It is not exactly on road 60, so that U.N. cars and human rights activists can’t see this mound. But the minibus which took the child to school can’t go through between the child’s house and the mound. The distance is about 500 meters and it is necessary of course to climb the mound, which is impossible for the child. Silvia takes pictures. While she is doing it a dune buggy is trying, unsuccessfully, to cross the mound. It is impossible to understand the urgent security reason for blocking the road, but one can easily understand the destructive result for the people, and above all for the crippled child, especially now that the rainy season is close by. Ezyon DCO – 10:00 On our way from Beit-Omar to Ezyon we crossed the CP which was manned this time. There were no detainees. There are a lot of people waiting at the DCO. A few “happy ones” got magnetic cards. We have no clients here today. We renewed the flyers’ stock and talked with a few of the waiting people. Even Fadal, the lawyer, didn’t bring new letters today because of the holyday. As we were leaving, few people addressed us. We had to go back home, but we exchanged phone numbers.
