| Afternoon

Bethlehem area, Wednesday PM, 7.2.07Observers: SW, DG, MBH (reporting), guestWe were told of a Palestinian family detained in Ezyon roundabout, and hurried there. But they were released before we arrived. We had a single receipt to hand over, at Nebi Yunes. There was an unusual traffic jam there, but the locals reported nothing special.Ezyon DCL: There were more cars in the parking lot than people inside.|n fact, this afternoon all seemed to be let in. A young man came to uswith an odd story. He has a magnetic card, good till 2010, and a valid permit to pass to Jerusalem, where he is employed. He lives in Bethlehem and goes back and forth daily. About a month ago, he was arrested and put under administrative detention for a total of 13 days. He professed not to know why. The first days were in Ezyon, where he said there was a detention center holding about 60 people. Then he was moved to Ofer. Then he was released. Now he’s back to passing to Jerusalem daily. But his belongings — primarily a cell phone and his wallet — which had been taken from him had not been returned. He has no documentation, either. He claims he has been coming to Ezyon for them for a few days, and doesn’t get them back. We couldn’t figure out why he was at the DCO. We went with him to the Ezyon police, who sent us to the Ezyon army camp. Of course, at the camp, they sent us to the police. It was odd that the young man didn’t seem to be able to direct us to where he had been supposedly detained, or to where he has been going daily. We later overheard him tell someone (in Arabic) that he was held because he is a member of the Jihad. But apparently after his release, he still has all his papers, and can still go into Jerusalem daily. The whole story was odd and inconsistent. And we couldn’t help.Bethlehem CP: Many people, only 2 lines open. But basically the queue moved at a steady and brisk clip.

    • Ofer The Military Court in the Ofer camp is located halfway between Ramallah and Jerusalem. The place has seven courtrooms, most of them spacious. This court is one of two courts of the "first instance", in addition to the military court in Salem. Here are the Palestinian hearings trials and some of the hearings in detention extensions. In addition, there is also a military court of appeals (on rulings of the courts of 'the first instance' in Salem and Ofer). Family members of detainees from the territories (usually only two family members) are allowed to enter the hearings but are prohibited from talking to the detainees. The families have at their disposal a waiting yard and a large, air-conditioned waiting room.
