Jordan Valley: Palestinian grazing areas are increasingly being reduced at the settlers initiative
We all arrived together at Al-Farisiya in the Jordan Valley at 7:00 a.m., and split into teams.
The day passed without incident, but the uncertainty and fear of the settlers, when there’s no knowing what might blow up at any time, is felt throughout the day and night. This is the appalling and unbearable reality for the herdsmen and women in the Valley. We identify with their concern and suffer from it too.
At 7:00 a.m., two escorts went to Ein Shek with A from Al-Farisiya and returned at 1:00 o’clock. The grazing passed without any problems, but there is almost no vegetation there. As a result, the shepherds have to make up the amount of food with barley and water, which they purchase at exorbitant prices. Another team of escorts stayed behind at Al-Farisiya as a protective presence. All was quiet. Another two teams accompanied two flocks to Ein al-Hilwe, and all was quiet there, but again, there’s hardly any vegetation and the shepherds need to spend thousands of shekels to feed their flocks. The price of the occupation.
All the escorts returned to Al-Farisiya for a rest and to hang out together with each other and the families.
At 3:00 p.m. there was a call from a resident of Ein al-Hilwe that settlers were roaming round his house. A pair of escorts went there immediately. The settlers were wandering round the house on the road to Hamam El Maliach, they went down past another encampment, crossed by it, but they didn’t go up to it – they went down to the spring. M was at the spring with his cows and the settlers who were bathing didn’t bother him. Another herdsman, H, went down to the spring with his cows and didn’t run into any trouble. The two escorts returned to Al-Farisiya. The pair who had remained there responded to herdsman F’s request and stayed with him and his cattle until the evening.
The night shift of volunteers and escorts arrived. The night passed quietly.
Indeed, a day without any special incidents, but with the heavy anguish and tension that don’t go away. The goal of harassing the herdsmen is ethnic cleansing. Everyone understands this and they are preparing for the worst.

Making a living from grazing sheep, the residents are exposed to harassment, abuse and theft from settlers who come to them from outposts and settlements in the area, and their grazing area is shrinking due to settler takeovers, fire zones and declared nature reserves.Machsom Watch companies participate in shepherd escort activities and provide a 24/7 protective presence, and there is continuous and warm contact with the community.
